Literature Text

Ever since Sylvia accidentally broke Stanley's new toy, she was willing to buy him a new one, but he told her it would cost a lot, but since she was his friend, she decided to try and earn some money anyway. She was sitting in the kitchen, trying to think of a way to earn money. Silver saw his daughter thinking.

Silver: Sylvia, is something on your mind?

Sylvia: I'm trying to think of a job I could take to earn money to pay off Stanley's toy.

Silver: Well, the garage is a bit messy right now and your mother told me to clean it out. Would you like to help me clean it for 3 dollars?

Sylvia: OK.

So Silver and Sylvia went into the garage to clear things out.

Silver: Now remember, make sure everything is nice and neat. Don't you ram everything together.

Sylvia: Got it.

So Sylvia made sure to put all the garden stuff under the tool wall where it should go, she put the boxes of soda into the garage refrigerator, and she put the trashcans in their right places. Soon, they were finished.

Silver: Nice job, Sylvia. How much did I say I'd pay you?

Sylvia: You said three dollars.

Silver: Did I? I think this called for five dollars.

Sylvia: OK.

So Silver payed Sylvia 5 dollars and she took it to her bank in her room. She then opened the bank to see how much money she had. She counted her money and saw she had $18.45.

Sylvia: Now what did Stanley say?

She remembered what Stanley told her about the cost of the toy.

(Flashback)

Stanley: The individual parts cost $2.25.

Sylvia: And what's the total?

Stanley: Well, without the cooling system, there were 40 individual pieces.

(Flashback ends)

Sylvia: OK. So let's see. He said the individual parts costed 2.25 and not counting the cooling system, that makes 40 parts in total. So 41 parts, including the cooling system, with each being $2.25 makes.....$92.25. I have 18.45 now. So this means I just need 73 more dollars. What can I do next?

The next day, Sylvia walked through town, trying to think up what she could do next to earn some money.

Sylvia: There most be something I could...

Just then, something blew into her face. She took it off to see it was a 50 dollar bill.

Sylvia: What's this? A 50 dollar bill? Great. Now I just need to get 23.80 more.
Just then, Knuckles showed up.

Knuckles: Hi, Sylvia. I'm sorry, but that slipped out of my hand. Can I have it back.

Sylvia frowned and gave the bill back to Knuckles.

Knuckles: Ah. Thank you. Here, take this.

Knuckles then gave Sylvia a 20 dollar bill.

Sylvia: Well, it's better than nothing.

She put the bill into her pocket.

Sylvia: At least I'm 53 dollars and 80 cents away now.

Knuckles: Are you looking for a job?

Sylvia: I am. Why?

Knuckles: Timothy feels like he needs to take a day off at watching the Master Emerald and I'm too busy. He's offering to pay someone to watch over the emerald for one day.

Sylvia: I'd be happy to help.

So Sylvia went over to see Timothy.

Sylvia: Hey Tim, your dad told me you were looking for someone to watch the Master Emerald for you.

Timothy: That's great. I'll be out until 5:30.

Sylvia: Where are you going anyway?

Timothy: My family and I are going to go to the Seedrian Fishing Hole.

Sylvia: OK. I can handle it.

Timothy: Great. I'll see you later.

So Timothy and his family left while Sylvia just sat in front of the Master Emerald.

Sylvia: This will be an easy job. I'm pretty sure there's nothing that'll try and threaten the Master Emerald.

Time passed, but Sylvia got bored.

Sylvia: Uhhh....I'm so bored. What time is it?

She looked at her watch. It said 2:00. She just signed and kept sitting. Finally, Timothy and his family came home.

Sylvia: Oh. Thank goodness you're back, Tim. How much do I get?

Timothy: Hmmmm...I guess 15 dollars will do.

Sylvia: OK.

So Timothy handed Sylvia a 10 dollar bill and a 5 dollar bill.

Sylvia: Thanks, Tim.

And she went for home. Later in her room, she counted up the money.

Sylvia: Alright. Now I have $53.45. How much more do I need? Hmmm...

She thought for a while.

Sylvia: $38.80. I'm more than halfway. What to do now.

The next day, Sylvia decided to look through the couches to find loose change. Blaze then walked into the room.

Blaze: What are you doing, Sylvia?

Sylvia: I'm trying to find some loose change in the couches.

Blaze: Loose cha-Oh. I see. You're trying to pay off for Stanley's broken toy, aren't you?

Sylvia: Yep. Oh.

She thought she found something. She pulled it out and it was two quarters.

Sylvia: Oh good. Now I just need $38.30 more.

Blaze: If you need money, you could help with getting my concert ready for tonight.

Sylvia: Really? That'll be great.

So later that night, Sylvia helped Blaze get the concert all set up.

Blaze: You can open and close the curtain when the show starts and ends. Can you do that?

Sylvia: Sure thing, Mom. What else can I do?

Blaze: You can get the guitar all set up for me.

Sylvia: And?

Blaze: And....I guess that's it.

Sylvia: OK. Will do. When will the show start?

Blaze: At 7:00. It's 6:40 right now. So we have 20 minutes.

Sylvia: OK.

So just before the show was ready to start, Sylvia got out the guitar and set it up on it's stand on the stage. Then she went over to the curtain. Blaze, who had gotten into her rock star outfit then got ready.

Announcer: Ladies and Gentlemen, I present to you, Blaze the Rock Star Cat.

Blaze: (whispers) Now, Sylvia.

And Sylvia started the open the curtains. It was a bit heavy for her, but she managed. Then Blaze put on her show. When the show was over. Blaze took a bow which gave Sylvia the signal to close the curtains.

Blaze: Very good, Sylvia.

Sylvia: Thanks, Mom. How much will I get payed for this?

Blaze: I'm thinking about 5 dollars.

Sylvia: Alright. That'll do.

So later at home, Sylvia found that she had $58.95.

Silver: So how much do you have now, Sylvia?

Sylvia: $58.95. I just need $33.30 more.

Silver: You say you have $58.95? You're very close to $60.00. Here, let me help you.

Silver then gave Sylvia a dollar bill and a nickel.

Sylvia: Wow. Thanks, Dad.

Silver: So now you just need $32.25.

Sylvia: Yeah. But where am I going to get that?

Silver: You'll have it soon enough, Sylvia. Don't worry.

The next day, Sylvia went out for a walk in the park.

Sylvia: I think I need to take a break from earning money and just take a walk in the park.

She then found me and Renae in the park. We were having a father-daughter day at the park.

Sylvia: Oh hi Eli. Hi Renae. What are you doing?

Renae: Dad and I are having a father-daughter day here at the park.

Eli: I decided I needed to take a break from being a secret agent for a while after arresting our former water delivery guy who turned out to be a villain this whole time.

Renae: So what have you been up to?

Sylvia: I've been working to earn some money to pay off a toy of Stanley's I broke, but I'm taking a break right now.

Eli: If you want to earn some money, why don't you run a lemonade stand?

Sylvia: A lemonade stand?

Eli: Haven't you ever seen those on TV?

Sylvia: Hmmm...Oh yeah. Now I remember. Maybe I could do that.

Eli: Alright.

Sylvia: Thanks, Eli.

And so Sylvia went home and set up her own lemonade stand and made herself some lemonade. She then sat down at the stand and waited for customers. She waited a while, and some customers did come. She charged 2 dollars per glass. By the end of the day, she had sold enough lemonade to earn $26.00.

Sylvia: Well. I now have $86.00. Now I just need 6.25 more. But it's getting late. So I better go in and try again tomorrow.

So she took down her stand and went inside. When she got in, Silver stopped her.

Silver: Hey Sylvia, want to earn some money?

Sylvia: Sure. What can I do?

Silver: Can you put the dishes away?

Sylvia: Sure I can do that.

Silver: OK. Let me tell you where everything goes.

So Silver and Sylvia went into the kitchen and Silver gave her the instructions.

Silver: The cups go into the left cupboard, the plates go into the right cupboard and the pots and pans go into the drawer under the stove.

Sylvia: Got it.

So Sylvia got all the dishes, cups, and pans into their places. Silver came back to inspect.

Silver: Very impressive work, Sylvia. I'm giving you four dollars.

Sylvia: Thanks, Dad. Now I'm really close to my goal.

Silver: That's great, Sylvia.

The next day, Stanley and Sylvia met with other another at the park.

Sylvia: So Stan, I managed to save up to $90.00 on your toy. I'm very close to paying it all off.

Stanley: You can stop right there. I can pay off whatever is left.

Sylvia: Really? Thank you.

Stanley: You worked really hard for me. You deserve it.

So Stanley was able to get his toy payed off and when it arrived a few days later, Stanley and Sylvia took it into the backyard to see how it really worked.

Sylvia: Wow. It works so much better than it did before.

Stanley: It certainly does. It was worth the wait to finally see it in real action.

Sylvia: It certainly was.
